Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which matters. It gets into the pore lining - not just the surface - and dissolves the debris that's accumulated over the day.

Four surfactants handle the rest: lauryl betaine, myristyl betaine, disodium cocoyl glutamate, and cocamidopropyl betaine.
